The World Wide Web has increasingly been used to collect survey data. Web-based surveys may lower the time and costs required for doing survey research. We-based surveys require thoughtful design and adherence to principles, much as with paper surveys. A study is presented that proposes guidelines for designing and implementing Web-based surveys. It is argued that successful Web-based surveys require 4 steps: 1. designing the survey on paper, 2. choosing a methodology, 3. turning the paper survey into a Web-based survey, and 4. informing the population of interest of the existence of the survey. If implemented properly, Web-based surveys offer many advantages to researchers.
